Hair routine

Hi everyone!

For my first post, I have chosen to talk about my hair routine.

I am like everyone else, I have a hate/love relationship with my hair. Some days I don’t know what to do with it and I just want to cut it shorter, and at the same time I will cry if the hairdresser cuts more than 0.5 mm…

That said, I like my hair to be healthy, voluminous and shiny. It took me a long time to find a routine, especially since I moved to Hong Kong where the water is different, the pollution level is higher and the sun is obviously stronger than my home country, Belgium.

After a year here, I had to cut my hair short as it had become too damaged because of a lack of care and this is when I started to look for good hair products and what to do in order to make it look better. I will not talk about shampoo and conditioner, because this topic is quite personal as everyone needs to find THE one (it’s a bit like choosing a new pair of jeans, who can relate to that?!? ???) If you are curious, I am alternating between 2 brands: Salon Essentials from dōTERRA and Curly Wurly from Lush. The important thing when you choose a shampoo (or any product in contact with your body) is to check that it’s paraben free. My rule is: I need to understand the list of components (erm, yes… I can spend hours choosing a shampoo).

I made a hairspray that I apply every morning. It gives a fresh smell after the night and lightly styles my hair. The spray is made with mineral water, aloe vera gel and some vegetable glycerine to which I add some drops of Ylang Ylang essential oil. Besides being an aphrodisiac, this essential oil is known for embellishing and strengthening your hair.  It is your perfect ally to make your hair shiny and strong. If you have that essential oil at home, you can also put a drop in your night cream for a relaxing smell and to help regenerate your skin.

You could add a drop of essential oil into your favourite shampoo when washing your hair to target a specific point you want to improve. Here is a list of essential oils that are suitable for hair. Remember that if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is better to avoid using essential oils. For men there are fewer restrictions, but some of the oils are not suitable for those with asthma, so please take care!

  • For dry hair: lavender, geranium, rosemary, ylang ylang, sandalwood
  • For greasy hair: bergamot, juniper, grapefruit, lemon, Cedar wood (atlantica)
  • to prevent hair loss: clary sage, lemon, thyme, ginger
  • for dandruff: tea tree, rosemary, eucalyptus, palmarosa, laurel (allergen)
  • for lifeless and breaking hair: ylang ylang, clary sage, sandalwood, peppermint, camomile
  • for volume: Rose wood, lemon grass
  • for frizzy hair: rose wood

As you can see, there is an option for every problem. I prefer to give you several to select from so you can check what you have at home and also make a choice according to the multiple uses of each oil. Also, it is important to choose one that you like the smell of.

I like the idea of adding a few drops of essential oils instead of buying a whole bottle of shampoo for a specific treatment. Your hair is different according to the season, your level of stress, your health, etc., so being able to customize your shampoo each time you wash your hair is beneficial.

At the moment, I have been struggling to choose one oil so I decided to test an oil blend from Dōterra, the Root to tip serum. It features several essential oils and the main smell is Rosemary which I really enjoy. So far, the advantage of that serum is that my hair still looks fresh after a workout session. Thanks to that, I am able to reduce the times I usually wash my hair to 2 times a week which is so much better for the health of your hair. Besides this, I found that it has more “texture” and stays looking nice for longer.

If you choose to take care of your hair in a more natural way, but you just bought a stock of your favorite shampoo, remember you can always buy 1 or 2 essential oils (or check the ones you have at home) and add few drops when you wash your hair. Later, you can take the time to choose a more natural shampoo, and I will be happy to customize one for you.

Drop me an email if you have a question, if you need any advice, or if you wish to order the spray, the serum or any essential oil.
